Ever since 1300, when Pope Boniface VIII instituted the first Holy Year, God’s people have experienced these celebrations as special gifts of grace. Through the centuries, millions upon millions of pilgrims have journeyed to the sacred places, giving living witness to the faith professed in every age.

Now, at 25 years into the new century, we recognize even more our need to gain new strength and certainty by looking to the future with open spirits, trusting hearts, and far-sighted vision. Our Holy Father’s chosen motto for this Jubilee — PILGRIMS OF HOPE — calls us to prayer, conversion, and care for one another and all of creation.
